Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has been named director general of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The 51-year-old’s appointment comes less than a month after he turned down an offer from the PCB to take over as coach following Geoff Lawson’s dismissal from that post.

A short statement on the PCB website read: “Mr Javed Miandad, former Test cricketer and captain of Pakistan cricket team, has been appointed director general of Pakistan Cricket Board with immediate effect.”

Miandad’s appointment has caused a rejig in the PCB’s hierarchy with Saleem Altaf, who was only recently appointed to the director general position, now moving to the position of chief operating officer.

Miandad, who is his country's highest run-scorer with 8,832 in 124 Tests, is the latest in a number of former players to be appointed to the PCB by new chairman Ijaz Butt.

Another former Pakistan skipper, Intikhab Alam, was named as the Pakistan coach earlier this month while former batsmen Ijaz Ahmed and Shoaib Mohammad were given roles on the selection committee.

Aamir Sohail has been appointed as director of the National Cricket Academy this month while Wasim Bari is the new director of human resources and administration.

On Monday, Bari announced that the PCB would be looking to dismiss several of the staff appointed by former chairman Nasim Ashraf as the governing body looks to reduce its costs.
